UTR vs ATP Rankings: How Does UTR Compare to ATP, WTA and USTA?

TL;DR UTR and ATP measure different things. UTR rates how well you play on a 1.00 to 16.50 scale from the games you win against rated opponents; the ATP and WTA rank pros by tournament points over 52 weeks. Top men sit near 16.4 UTR, top women near 13, and USTA puts recent top-1000 pros at NTRP 7.0.

UTR is a rating and the ATP list is a ranking, and that one difference explains most of the gaps between them. A rating estimates how well someone plays right now. A ranking orders players by what they have won over a fixed period. Universal Tennis builds UTR from the share of games you win against opponents of known strength, while the ATP and WTA add up points for rounds reached at tournaments. USTA's NTRP is a third system: a half-point level that decides which league you may enter. Below, the three sit side by side, with the November 2025 numbers for the players at the top of both lists.

How does UTR differ from the ATP rankings?

UTR differs from ATP rankings because UTR rates performance while the ATP ranks accumulated points. Universal Tennis averages up to 30 match ratings from the past 12 months, each based on games won against the opponent's UTR. The ATP adds up points from the previous 52 weeks of tournaments, so a Grand Slam title pays 2,000 points whatever the score.

The score matters in one system and not the other. A 6-4, 6-4 loss to a stronger player can raise your UTR if you won more games than the algorithm expected. On tour, the same loss earns whatever that round is worth and nothing for the closeness of the sets. UTR also throws some results out: according to the Universal Tennis algorithm FAQ, when the gap between two players is more than 2.00 and the favorite wins, the match does not count for either of them.

What UTR do ATP and WTA tour pros have?

The best ATP tour pros carry UTRs between 16.0 and 16.5. In the November 2025 year-end list from UTR Sports, Jannik Sinner led at 16.47, tying Novak Djokovic's record high, with Carlos Alcaraz at 16.41 and the tenth man, Grigor Dimitrov, at 15.98. The women's top ten ran from 12.66 to 12.96 on the same scale.

UTR puts men and women on one scale, so the gap of roughly 3.5 points between the two lists is UTR's own estimate of the difference in level. For perspective, our UTR to NTRP chart puts a 4.0 league player around UTR 6 to 8. A solid 4.0 at UTR 7 sits about six points below the WTA top ten and about nine below the ATP top ten.

Why do the UTR No. 1 and ATP No. 1 differ?

The UTR No. 1 and ATP No. 1 differed at the end of 2025 because the two systems reward different things. Carlos Alcaraz finished 2025 as the ATP year-end No. 1 on tournament points, while Jannik Sinner finished first by UTR. Among women, Elena Rybakina topped UTR at 12.96 while ranked No. 5 by the WTA.

Points reward titles and attendance. UTR rewards margins against strong opponents and ignores how many events you entered. Jack Draper sat out the end of 2025 with a left-arm injury and still finished fourth by UTR at 16.13, because UTR averages the matches he did play. Aryna Sabalenka held WTA No. 1 all year, but Rybakina's unbeaten run to the WTA Finals title in Riyadh, including a win over Sabalenka in the final, lifted her UTR past Sabalenka's in the last weeks of the season.

How do UTR and ATP points systems work?

ATP points are fixed by event and round, while UTR has no points at all. The ATP awards 2,000 points for a Grand Slam title, 1,000 for a Masters 1000, 500 and 250 for those tiers, and up to 1,500 at the Nitto ATP Finals. UTR instead turns each result into a match rating and takes a weighted average.

The ATP rankings FAQ counts a capped number of best results: 18 events, with the Nitto ATP Finals as an extra 19th for players who qualify. Challenger titles pay 50 to 175 points. Points fall off after 52 weeks, which is why a champion "defends" points the following year. UTR has nothing to defend. A match ages out after 12 months, or sooner when 30 newer matches push it off, and it loses weight gradually before then. Format counts too: a best-of-three match carries more weight than an eight-game pro set, and a match against an opponent with a reliable rating carries more than one against a newcomer.

How does USTA NTRP compare to ATP rankings?

USTA NTRP does not convert to an ATP ranking, but the USTA does map pro careers onto NTRP. Its self-rating guidelines place any player ranked in the ATP or WTA top 1000 within the last five years at NTRP 7.0, and a player ranked outside the top 1000 in that window at 6.5, at any age.

Older pro careers rate lower with age. Under the USTA General and Experienced Player Guidelines (updated March 2025), a former top-400 player whose ranking is more than five years old self-rates from 4.5 at age 66 and over up to 6.0 at age 36 to 45. Players who earned points at ITF, Futures or Challenger events have minimum levels too. So "USTA vs ATP" works in one direction only: an ATP or WTA ranking sets the floor for a player's NTRP, and no NTRP level tells you anything about an ATP position. Our guide to NTRP self-rating and appeals covers how those minimums are applied.

Which rating should a USTA league player watch?

A USTA league player should watch NTRP first, because only NTRP decides which league level you may enter. UTR has no effect on USTA league eligibility, and an ATP or WTA ranking matters only if you played professionally. UTR is still useful for scouting, because it moves after every recorded match while NTRP is published once a year.

If you need a number for a specific level, the UTR to NTRP conversion chart lists typical UTR ranges for every NTRP level. For how NTRP, UTR, ATP rankings and USPTA coaching certification fit together, read UTR to NTRP conversion: USTA ratings compared.

Key takeaways

  • UTR is a rating of current level; the ATP and WTA lists are rankings of points won over the previous 52 weeks.
  • UTR scores each match by games won against the opponent's rating, so a close loss to a stronger player can raise it.
  • At the end of 2025 the men's UTR top ten ran from 15.98 to 16.47 and the women's from 12.66 to 12.96.
  • Alcaraz finished 2025 ATP No. 1 while Sinner finished UTR No. 1; Rybakina led UTR while ranked No. 5 by the WTA.
  • USTA self-rating guidelines put any ATP or WTA top-1000 player from the last five years at NTRP 7.0.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is UTR the same as the ATP ranking?

No. UTR is a rating from 1.00 to 16.50 that estimates current level from the share of games won against rated opponents over the last 12 months. The ATP ranking orders professionals by points earned at tournaments over 52 weeks. The two lists usually agree at the top but often differ in order.

What UTR do ATP pros have?

The ATP top ten carried UTRs between 15.98 and 16.47 in the UTR Sports year-end list for November 2025. Jannik Sinner led at 16.47, Carlos Alcaraz was second at 16.41 and Novak Djokovic third at 16.30. Ratings recalculate nightly, so current figures move by a few hundredths.

What is the highest UTR rating ever recorded?

The highest UTR rating on record is 16.47, held jointly by Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner, who matched it at the end of 2025 according to UTR Sports. The scale stops at 16.50, so no player has reached the ceiling. Among women, year-end 2025 leader Elena Rybakina stood at 12.96.

Do men and women use the same UTR scale?

Yes. Universal Tennis rates men, women and juniors on one 1.00 to 16.50 scale, so ratings compare directly across genders. At the end of 2025 the WTA top ten sat between 12.66 and 12.96 UTR, roughly 3.5 points below the men's top ten, which ranged from 15.98 to 16.47.

What NTRP rating is an ATP player?

A player ranked in the ATP or WTA top 1000 within the last five years must self-rate at NTRP 7.0, the top of the scale, under USTA's General and Experienced Player Guidelines. A player ranked outside the top 1000 in that window rates 6.5. Older professional careers rate lower, depending on age.

Does my UTR or ATP ranking affect USTA league eligibility?

UTR does not affect USTA league eligibility at all; only your NTRP level decides which league you may enter. A professional ranking matters indirectly, because USTA self-rating guidelines turn ATP, WTA, ITF and Challenger results into minimum NTRP levels that a former pro must use when entering league play.
