How does 4.5 compare with 4.0 and 5.0 on UTR?
Among computer-rated USTA league players in our data, a 4.5 man's median singles UTR is 7.2, against 5.9 at 4.0 and 8.9 at 5.0. A 4.5 woman's median is 5.0, against 4.0 at 4.0 and 6.5 at 5.0. Neighbouring levels overlap on UTR.
What does a teammate's UTR say about their NTRP level?
A singles UTR in the 4.5 range does not make someone a 4.5, because adjacent NTRP levels overlap on UTR. At each whole UTR number where 4.5 players make up at least 30% of the computer-rated USTA league players holding it, our data shows this mix of levels:
- Of men with a singles UTR of 7, 58% are 4.5, 33% are 4.0, 6% are 3.5.
- Of men with a singles UTR of 8, 54% are 4.5, 21% are 5.0, 15% are 4.0.
- Of women with a singles UTR of 5, 50% are 4.5, 25% are 4.0, 12% are 3.5.
Which tennis backgrounds self-rate at 4.5 or higher?
A new USTA league player without a computer rating self-rates in TennisLink, where a questionnaire about tennis history sets a minimum level. Under the USTA General and Experienced Player Guidelines (March 2025), each of the following backgrounds sets a minimum of 4.5:
- Junior national ranking 501 to 1000, or top 30 in your section, with no college tennis, if you are 30 or younger
- Played on or signed with a Division I college team, if you are 31 to 40

Key takeaways
- Most USTA 4.5 men hold a singles UTR of 6.5 to 7.9, median 7.2, among computer-rated league players in our data.
- Most 4.5 women hold a singles UTR of 4.5 to 5.6, median 5.0, so men and women at the same level need separate numbers.
- Doubles UTRs for 4.5 players run 6.8 to 7.7 for men and 4.7 to 5.4 for women, a tighter band than singles.
- Adjacent NTRP levels overlap on UTR, so a teammate whose UTR sits in the 4.5 range is not necessarily a 4.5.
- USTA league eligibility runs on NTRP alone, and no UTR moves a player up or down a level.

Does my UTR affect whether I can play 4.5 USTA league?
No. USTA league eligibility runs on your NTRP rating alone. A UTR above the 4.5 range does not move you up, though captains and opponents do look at it. A UTR below the range does not move you down either. Levels change through the USTA's own process: a new year-end rating, an appeal or a disqualification.
